Mitsubishi Rail Crossing Rehabilitation

Mitsubishi Rail Crossing Rehabilitation

The Mitsubishi Electric plant in Memphis, TN is an exhibit of efficiency and performance. When an essential railroad crossing was causing issues to train movement and was potentially going to disrupt their supply chain, they needed to repair it.  So, they called Ground Works Solutions.

The precast panels of the crossing were rocked loose from its crossties and anchor bolts due to continuous high-volume traffic from Trucks from the intermodal yard, steel manufacturer and the Mitsubishi plant.  Eventually dips and bumps formed leading to further damage of the asphalt.  The role for Ground Works Solutions was to stabilize the fill, increase its weight bearing capacity and minimize future settlement of the precast panels.

Ground Works did this by implementing a polymer bridging technique that was designed to increase the soil bearing capacity to better support the roadway and the heavy train and road traffic.  We did this by injecting a high-density structural polyurethane that, once injected, expands up to 25-times its initial volume.  The polymer initially saturates, expands throughout, and combines with the soil, creating a highly dense layer of sand and polymer.  With our bridging technique, we were able to dramatically increase load-bearing capacity with the minimal amount of polymer required.   All work was completed in 2.5 days and ready for traffic at the end of each shift.
