Kentucky Convention Center Soil Bearing Capacity Increase Video

By Robert Armstead

The Kentucky International Convention Center has been going through a major renovation, adding new conference space comprising of an entire city block.  Typically with extra space comes extra weight, and this is no different for this renovation project.  When needing to support more weight, choices become complex.  You can either demolish the entire structure and install new foundation supports, or you can reinforce the existing supports with soil bearing capacity increase methods.

Ground Works saved time and money for the rehabilitation of the Kentucky International Convention Center by reinforcing the column supports utilizing an innovative compaction method. With partnership from Golder Associates, we increased the weight-bearing capacity of unconsolidated undocumented fill and expedited the completion of this project by approximately 6 months.

When is Polyurethane Grout an effective Rehabilitation Option?

By Robert Armstead
Lateral Line Repair

The use of polyurethane grout injection for soil densification and structural rehabilitation has been revolutionizing the way public works managers and building managers think about rehabilitation vs. replacement. Due to cost-effectiveness and innovations in injection techniques, the viability of the solution has been “fast expanding” and the applications are spanning across a variety of uses, such as roadway lifting, manhole and joint sealing, dam seepage barriers, seawall stabilization, and building foundation realignment. The question is, when does polyurethane grout make sense as a rehabilitation solution?

As you can imagine, this question is filled with a ton of variables, but we will try our best to identify typical rehabilitation opportunities and questions you should ask yourself around overall viability.

1.) Is the issue repairable via polyurethane injection?

Dealing with Soil Subsidence can be Quick and Non Disruptive

Dealing with Soil Subsidence can be Quick and Non Disruptive

On November 18th, the Tampa Bay Times published a story entitled Is one of Tampa Bay’s premier condo towers sinking?.  The article discusses how “very loose and very soft bay bottom soils” have caused movement of the foundation that has resulted in “significant subsidence concerns and structural design deficiencies.”

Soil Subsidence is a common problem in Florida.  Florida’s sandy soils and geological conditions can cause the soils to collapse away from the surface often times leaving voids underneath foundations and surface structures.  Under instances where there is overbearing weight, the support soils will become inadequate to support the structure.

First of all, it is always best to ensure that the soil compaction density is sufficient before building the…
